Skinny Friday Update: I failed. It was a bad week. I’m about even or up a pound.

Bootstaps: pulled up.

Operation: Do better next week.

As a side note, my husband is doing amazing. Putting me to utter shame. Gotta get my A game on and beat him!

Yucky note:

Went to the eye doctor yesterday. Annabelle has to have glasses.

We also have to “patch” one eye two hours a day.

Hmmm… YOU try putting a patch over an 18 month old’s eyes for 2 hours a day and wearing (on top of the patch) glasses on the same face that had tubes out gallore this past year and she is sensative about and lets NOTHING near.

Yeah, this is not good. Not good at all.

I know she needs it. I just…

I’m mad. Okay, maybe not mad. But irritated. At God.

I just want to scream, “REALLY???? You don’t think she’s been through enough???”

I know. It’s dumb. It’s just glasses. A ton of people need them. It’s not a big deal.

But I’m struggling with this. I cried in the eye-glasses store today (right along with Annabelle.)

And I’m overwhelmed. I LOVE being home with my Annabelle, but between meds and feeds and doctors appointments and therapies not to mention taking care of my other three kiddos, my writing, and trying to keep up with the house (which I’ve been utterly failing at…) I’m now adding wrestling daily with my daughter to keep glasses and an eye patch on.

Oye.

Okay, I’ll stop complaining.  because really it’s not about me that I’m frustrated with. It just hurts my heart to have to add this to Annabelle. She’s adorable, glasses or not, but it just feels like this foreign “thing” that is scarring her face when we are finally “thing” free after having “things” invading her face for so long (i.e. ventilator, NG tubes, oxygen cannula…) She hates anything on her head/face. And I’m adding more for her to hate.

It’s for her good. I know, I know, I know. She’ll be able to SEE (and considering her seriously bad vision, it’s questionable how much she’s seeing without them, the girl has some serious blur going on!) and seeing is a GOOD thing.

But… yeah.

I promise, I’m done complaining this time.

Pictures to come on Monday. As soon as I get her to keep them up for more than 2 seconds….

  1. Maybe just a minute at a time to begin with?? Once she truly accepts them you can leave them on longer. {{{Krista}}}}

    1. Yes, that's what we are doing. It is a minute I dread every day now!! ha!

  2. Nathan has to wear a patch for 2 hours a day. At first he hated it but he got used to it quick. Still fights putting it on but is ok after I get it there. I totally get the mad part. I was upset when I found out we were going to have to deal with that to. Poor babies! I will pray that she gets used to them quick.

    1. Thanks. We are starting with the glasses, and working up to the patch. With my other daughter (same issue) they advised us to do glasses for a while before starting the patch. Annabelle's eye doctor has a different philospophy… but I'm just trying to do it in stages. We shall see!

  3. I'll pray that Annabelle likes being able to see better so much that she learns to keep her glasses on. And don't feel like you failed with your dieting. Staying the same or gaining one measly pound is not the end of the world. Hey, if you were a dieting/weight loss superhero, you might get a big head instead! And that's a much worse problem!

    1. Thanks, Christin!

Yeah, I know it's not the end of the world. I just REALLY want to get back on the wagon soon!

HA! And way to look at the bright side! I LOVE IT!

  4. We started patching my older boy at six months and continued until he was two (when he had surgery in both eyes for strabismus. It is possible. I promise! All the best.

    1. 6 months! You all are making me feel better! We started at 2 1/2 years with my Gabby, so we've gone through it before (we only patched for 2 months though…)

  5. My sweet daughter got glasses at 5 months, and I totally understand get where you are coming fun. A few things that helped me, her, and maybe some other people–we had a little "party" to celebrate her new glasses, I started wearing my glasses sometimes instead of contacts so she didn't feel like the only one who wore glasses, we included glasses in her "getting dressed" routine so they became a habit, immediately after putting her glasses on I gave her something interesting to keep her hands busy (maybe some tape or a favorite toy or lotion). Although I've never met you, you seem like a FABULOUS mom. You can do this!

    1. 5 months! WOW!

Yeah, she has two sisters that have glasses, and I have glasses I wear 100% of the time, and daddy wears his a lot too, so she has tons of people to "see" that match her! I'm hoping that eventually that will help…

      And thank you.

Dad gum it, I CAN do this! 🙂

  6. Looks like you have alot of good advice here! I must admit, I can't wait to see the pics. I bet she is adorable..she already is!

As for the skinny part…don't beat yourself up about staying the same. At least it is not a huge gain!!!! Kuddos to not gaining!

I weighed in Thursday and had lost another 3.2 pounds. That makes 6.4 in the past two weeks. I'm kinda surprised, but you always lose more during the first couple of weeks. Next week may not be so good. 🙂

    1. She IS adorable no matter what.

YEAH YEAH YEAH for the loss!!!! Cheering for you, and hoping to JOIN you next week!!!!!

  7. I wonder if this is a common transplant thing….I found out about a month ago that my 20 month old (14 months post tx) needed glasses for extreme farsighteness and accommodative esotropia (crossing eyes to focus). I was also very worried about her keeping them on but she suprised me and took to them right away. Good luck.

  8. We just started the glasses/patch thing with my 4 1/2 year old. Luckily we can reason somewhat with him at that age as to why he needs it, but it can still be a struggle some nights. But, in the first two months we did it he has doubled how well he can see out of the lazy eye so the battle at least has a reward!

We also have a type of patch that slips over the glasses, instead of the stick-on type that is easier to get him to use. You just have to watch because I catch him peering over the top of it at times.
